NEW HONOUR ROLL TO GO UP THIS WEDNESDAY

This Wednesday, 26 July, at 1:30pm, the brand new Byron Bay surfers’ honour roll will be erected in ‘Surf Alley’, Jonson Street, officially completing the transformation of the space, and honouring local surf legends in perpetuity.

The new honour roll replaces a faded painted list of Byron Bay’s surfing legends, which was originally commissioned by Byron Bay Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Byron Bay Boardriders.

Designed and produced by Shogun Signs, and commissioned by Popped Creative, it is a handcrafted surfboard-shaped mural, with all the original names embossed into it.

“We’re so excited to finally have the honour roll installed,” says Popped Director Monique Hartman. “It was an important part of the project to ensure we respected our town’s surfing legacy, and we think everyone will really like the new incarnation. The original mural was a great initiative, but the paint was fading. This way, the names won’t fade, and the honour roll will be protected, even if the alley is repainted again down the track”.

COWORKER PROFILE: POPPED CREATIVE

Meet Liesel Arden, Abbie Gibson, and Monique Hartman: Directors of Popped Creative - Byron Bay's newest events and creative service agency.

Popped launched with a splash in May 2017 with its inaugural pop-up event – a laneway activation in 'Surf Alley' in the Byron Bay CBD.

The project commissioned six local street artists to reinvigorate the tired laneway with progressive, imaginative art, and was celebrated with a weekend-long party featuring live DJ performances, light installations, green art, bespoke furniture, street food, beverages, and a vibe that knocked the town’s sock’s off!

The event sold out, and turned an estimated 400-600 people away over the course of the weekend, and had many patrons begging for more of this style of event in Byron.

Coming up Popped

Not this Friday, but Friday and Saturday 19-20 May save the date for the Laneway pop-up bar and restaurant on Friday and Saturday 5–11pm in ‘Surf Alley’ opposite the Hotel Great Northern, just off Jonson St in Byron Bay. There will also be day events 12–3pm on Saturday.

Those of you who have followed the story of these events in The Echo over the years will recall that it started with the idea of ‘activating’ laneways in Byron, and getting more people moving around town (not in cars!).

As part of the ‘placemaking’ process (ie collectively activating and beautifying our public spaces to increase their value to the community), places are not just ‘designed’ but they are then used for the benefit of all.

Byron Bay’s Jonson Street Lane will soon be popping with POPPED

Commencing May 12, a team of Byron Bay’s most talented street artists will transform ‘Surf Alley’, the laneway in Jonson Street that – despite its murals honouring local surfers – has often been used as nothing more than a pedestrian thoroughfare and hot spot for late-night anti-social behaviour.

The celebration of the space reinvigoration will be an urban laneway activation event, encompassing live art, street food, bar, music, cool lighting, green walls, bespoke sustainable furniture, Live Ideas Program, and much more.

The event creates a platform for emerging artists who would not otherwise have an opportunity to engage with the local community. The Fresh Air Gallery is a live street art gallery that will auction the finished artworks on Instagram at the end of the night, raising money for the Byron Community Theatre’s much needed upgrades.
